AMD Ryzen 12-Core, 24-Thread CPU Surges on SiSoftware Sandra

The CPU itself is an engineering sample, coded 2D2701A9UC9F4_32/27_N. Videocardz did a pretty god job on explaining what the nomenclature means, but for now, we do know this sample seems to be running at 2.7 GHz Base, and 3.2 GHz Boost clocks (not too shabby for a 12-core part, but a little on the anemic side when compared to previous reports on a 16-Core chip from AMD that would run at 3.1 GHz Base and 3.6 GHz Boost clocks.) What seems strange is the program's report on the available cache. 8x 8 MB is more than double what we would be expecting, considering that these 12-core parts probably make use of a die with 3 CCX's with 4x cores each, which feature 8 MB per CCX. So, 3 CCX's = 3x 8 MB, not 8x 8 MB, but this can probably be attributed to a software bug, considering the engineering-sample status of the chip.

AMD Ryzen Quad-Core 2+2 vs. 4+0 Core Distributions Compared

With AMD readying quad-core variants of its Ryzen "Summit Ridge" processor, the question on everyone's minds is whether the chip features two quad-core compute complexes (CCX) with two cores enabled, each, or just one CCX, given that the L3 cache amount being advertised by the company is 8 MB (that of one CCX), in comparison to 6-core Ryzen parts receiving the full 16 MB (8 MB per CCX) available on the silicon. While we will be able to definitively answer that question on the 11th of April, a new UEFI firmware by ASUS for its Crosshair VI Hero motherboard lets users not just disable cores, but also the distribution of the disabled cores.

CPU cores on the Ryzen "Summit Ridge" processor are distributed in two groups of four cores, each, called the quad-core compute complex (CCX). Each CCX has an 8 MB L3 cache, and so the ideal way of distributing cores on lower core-count models would be to disable an equal number of cores per CCX. For 6-core chips, one core is disabled per CCX, resulting in a 3+3 configuration. For quad-core chips, however, you can either disable all four cores in a CCX (4+0 configuration), or do a purportedly more optimal 2+2 configuration, with two cores disabled per CCX. Hardware Unboxed took advantage of ASUS' new UEFI firmware to compare the 4+0 configuration to the 2+2 configuration. The results are somewhat surprising.
As you can see in the graphs above, there is practically no performance difference between the 4+0 configuration and the 2+2 configuration. In fact, the 4+0 configuration is mildly faster in some scenarios. AMD already advertised quad-core Ryzen parts to feature just 8 MB of L3 cache, and so it could make more sense to keep all 8 MB in one CCX, and disable an entire CCX to run the chip in a 4+0 configuration, than disabling 4 MB per CCX, and running it in a 2+2 configuration. This way, a single core can dump >4 MB of data onto the L3 cache it addresses (as opposed to being limited to 4 MB in a 2+2 configuration with just 4 MB per CCX). Inter-CCX communication may be fast, but not fast enough to make a core from one CCX address the L3 cache of another CCX (which by the way is not possible, according to AMD). This is what makes 4+0 a more desirable configuration for the upcoming quad-core Ryzen parts, than 2+2.

Deci Ryzen are nevoie de memorii rapide ca sa straluceasca un pic.
Faptul ca au updatat jocul asa repede ca sa fie optimizat si pentru Ryzen ne pune pe gandit, problema de performanta in jocuri nefiind doar la Ryzen

Suspectez ca developeri nu au avut de ce sa optimizeze jocurile pentru mai mult de 4 core-uri, din moment ce cota de piata era f mica pentru cei ce folosesc astfel de CPU pentru gaming... multumita AMD timpurile se schimba

@eidos S-a optimizat deja ce era de optimizat pentru arhitectura Intel. Si nu vorbim doar de 4 cores (oricum i7 este 4 cores / 8 threads) pentru ca AOS inteleg ca utilizeaza tot ce are la dispozitie.
Cred ca optimizarea in AOS este mai mult pe arhitectura in sine, fiind necesare modificari/upgrade-uri in cazul AMD.

Daca vorbim insa de alte titluri/jocuri, aici avem nevoie de optimizari pentru ambele arhitecturi si se vor vedea cresteri de performanta si la AMD si la Intel daca se vor utiliza mai mult de 4 cores.

@cristi_io asa se pare, sunt unii care au reusit sa faca teste cu memoriile la 3600 Mhz si iarasi s-a vazut o crestere de performanta. Insa si Intel beneficieaza de cresteri de performanta cand treci de la 2133Mhz la 3200Mhz si apoi la 4000 Mhz. Sa speram ca dupa ceva timp vom putea utiliza 4000 Mhz si pe AMD.

Diferenta cea mai mare e in jocuri, si asta la 1080p, unde memoria mai rapida conteaza, in rest nu prea mari schimbari.

AMD Community Update: BIOS Updates, Patches, Performance Improvements

BIOS updates are incoming which, according to AMD's own Robert Hallock, build upon AMD's AGESA (AMD Generic Encapsulated Software Architecture) version 1.0.0.4 - which is essentially the precursors for any BIOS file, being "responsible for initializing AMD x86-64 processors during boot time, acting as something of a "nucleus" for the BIOS updates you receive for your motherboard". Hallock mentions how BIOSes based on this AGESA release will bring improvements towards the Ryzen ecosystem:

- Reduced DRAM latency by approximately 6ns. This can result in higher performance for latency-sensitive applications.
- Resolved a condition where an unusual FMA3 code sequence could cause a system hang.
- Resolved the "overclock sleep bug" where an incorrect CPU frequency could be reported after resuming from S3 sleep.
- AMD Ryzen Master (AMD's software overclocking utility) no longer requires the High-Precision Event Timer (HPET) - which itself impacts performance on AMD Ryzen CPUs. So while you would surely see some performance gains from overclocking, some of those would be offset by the performance penalty induced by HPET's enablement.

So, latency is improved, and that FMA3 bug is reportedly getting fixed. These take care of the BIOS part of the equation, with AMD promising the release of a new AGESA version in May that "focuses on overclocked DDR4 memory."

Other than that, a new game has received a patch which improves performance under an AMD Ryzen 7 system - DOTA 2, one of the most successful MOBAs ever released. This update, dated March 20 - sorry for the "slight" delay - brought about "Improved threading configuration for AMD Ryzen processors." This is a game whose developers didn't publicly commit to exploring performance penalties of their game code running on a Ryzen 7 processor, but who introduced a game update that improved performance on those conditions. On a system configured with AMD Ryzen7 1800X Processor, 2x8GB DDR4-2933 (15-17-17-35), GeForce GTX 1080 (378.92 driver), Gigabyte GA-AX370-Gaming5, Windows 10 x64 build 1607, and a 1920x1080 resolution, Hallock reports 15% higher minimum framerates (from 79 to 91), lowering input latency by around 1.7ms.
